Home / What to do in Holland? / Museums & Tours | Enjoy and learn / Take a trip back in time at open-air museum Archeon

At the open-air museum Archeon, you step into the world of history and experience prehistory, the Roman Period and the Middle Ages and learn all about life back then! Archeon lets you experience the history of the Netherlands. From prehistory around 8800 B.C., the Roman Period and the Middle Ages until 1350 A.D.

The open-air museum consists of 45 farms, houses and huts. All the buildings are inhabited by the Archaeo-interpreters. These people can tell you all about life in the past. Many activities are also organised.

Travel back in time

At Archeon, you will discover what life was like in three different epochs. Prehistory, Roman times and the Middle Ages.

8800 V. Chr. – 12 V. Chr. Join us on a journey very far back in time to the camp of hunter-gatherers, the first farmers, the Bronze and Iron Ages.

Ride in a real log canoe, get painted as a real hunter, bake a prehistoric sandwich on stick, drag a dolmen stone and learn how to make fire with a real flint.

12 V. Chr. – 406 AD. Visit the Roman border village Trajectum ad Rhenum and meet the Romans.

Exercise in the Roman legion, enjoy a Roman arm massage in the bathhouse, make a beautiful fibula (Roman pin) and discover Roman herbs.

406 N. Chr. – 1500 N. Chr. In the medieval town of Gravendam, you live in the 14th century. People work hard in the craft houses.

Make a candle at the beekeeper, learn archery and shoot the arrow in the bull’s-eye on the archery field, show off your sword-fighting skills and make a bracelet from felt.
