Just a short ride from the Bollenstreek, the historic university city of Leiden is one of the Netherlands’ most rewarding day trips. This is the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn, the city where the Pilgrim Fathers lived before sailing to America, and home to the country’s oldest university. Wander along candle-lit canals, climb the medieval Burcht fortress, drift past gabled houses on a canal cruise, or step into world-class museums – Leiden packs centuries of Dutch history into a compact, walkable centre.
Combine your visit with the tulip fields, Keukenhof, or a relaxing afternoon on the beach in Katwijk or Noordwijk – Leiden is easily reached from Amsterdam, The Hague, Delft and Haarlem, making it a perfect addition to any Holland itinerary.
Discover Leiden from the water

Leiden’s nickname, “Sleutelstad” (Key City), comes from its layered canal system – and the best way to experience it is from the water. A canal cruise glides you past Rembrandt’s birthplace, the Pieterskerk, and gabled merchant houses that have hardly changed in 400 years. Prefer to set your own pace? Rent your own boat and steer through the canals at leisure, or book a private cruise for a special occasion.
Beyond the city centre, the Kagerplassen – a chain of lakes just north of Leiden – are a favourite with sailors, paddleboarders and anyone craving open-water views over the Dutch polder landscape.
